STYLE IS KNOWING WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU STAND FOR.

STYLE IS KNOWING WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU STAND FOR.

** WARNING! This article involves a small dose of 'fashion consciousness' pleading before returning to the first intention of being a lovely original fashion post.  Hmmm.

My Mum says people don't change.  I say they do.

I know this to be true because it's happened to me.

That's right.

I've changed. {drum roll}

……………………………………………………………….

I can't make spontaneous purchases anymore.

I actually find it really hard to let my customers make spontaneous purchases too.

I need to KNOW things now.

Know things?  Like?

Who made this garment?

What fabrications are used?

Where was this made?

How was this made?

And I lose sleep if people don't know the answers to my questions.

Truly.

Because I worry.

That if people don't know …

Don't know who made their clothes ...

Don't know what fabrications they are buying ...

Don't know how a piece was put together ...

Don't know where a garment was made ...

Do people really care?

And if we don't care then …

WHAT'S THE POINT of us all swanning about looking fabulous?

Now.

Something else my Mum says is that I make things more complicated than they need to be.

But really.  It's time to get to get complicated.  VERY complicated.

Because this fashion thing.  This 'style' thing is REAL.  And it totally matters.

We of the first world are 'buying' at a frenzy never seen before in our world.  And truly, it's not good for us as individuals, us as a total human race and certainly, not good for our beautiful world.

It matters that you know the person who made your clothes.

Because then you'll know that they are being well looked after.  And not made to sew in unsavoury places for 12 hours a day.

It matters that you know your fabrications.

Natural fabrications are a sustainable choice for our world.  Synthetic fabrics are akin to wearing a plastic bag.  No good for the wearer OR the environment.

It matters HOW a garment is put together.

Well made garments should last a wearer many, many, many seasons. It matters that people consciously craft pieces in the cheapest possible way … internationalising a short customer experience so that you'll be back at the purchase line.

It matters that a consumer knows where a garment was made.

The 'where' is a strong clue as to the creators values.  Pieces crafted close to home will more likely be small runs.  Pieces crafted in Bangladesh are only done so for one reason … cheap labour.

But perhaps I digress?  Isn't this supposed to be a lovely fashion story about a small butterfly kaftan?

These images are of a little collection I'm working on.

Cotton kaftans for small people.  My heart is for each piece to be ;

100% cotton.  A natural fabrication.  Good for the wearer and for our environment.

100% original design.  Clean cut, very wearable, very trans seasonal.

100% Australian made & ethical.

Fashion for the win.

………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Anyhow, who knows.  My Mum may just be changing after all.

She is TOTALLY freaked out that her favourite Winter jumper this season was made in Bangladesh.

She may just become 'tag checking obsessive'.  Like me.
